Surrogacy Pricing: How International Surrogacy Costs Are Built

By Louise & Hélène, Nest & Co co-founders · 8 min read · Updated June 2026

Few questions matter more when you start exploring international surrogacy than this one: how much does it actually cost? Honest answers are surprisingly hard to find online — agencies dance around the question or hide figures behind contact forms. This guide is different. We don’t publish a single number here, because meaningful pricing only exists once we’ve understood your situation. What we can do is walk you through how surrogacy pricing is actually built, what drives the final figure, and what to watch for. For complete current figures by destination, you can download our full pricing brochure.

How surrogacy costs are built

The total cost of an international surrogacy journey is the sum of several distinct components. Each line in your eventual quote ties back to one of these categories. Understanding them upfront makes it far easier to compare programmes between countries, spot what’s missing from a proposal, and avoid surprises later in the process.

01
🏠

Programme fees in the destination country

Surrogate compensation or expenses, agency coordination, medical management, legal work in country, and post-birth procedures.

02
🧬

Embryo creation

IVF with your own eggs, or with donor eggs, plus genetic testing (PGT-A) where relevant. Often done in a different country than the surrogacy itself.

03
🧪

Optional medical add-ons

Additional screening, sperm wash procedures, carrier panels, or fertility services if your medical situation calls for them.

04

Independent guidance fees

The work of an independent agency — coordinating the entire journey on your behalf, separate from any clinic or destination programme.

05

Travel and personal expenses

Flights, accommodation during key visits, your stay around the birth, certified translations, and post-birth administrative procedures.

What changes by destination

We work with carefully selected partners in countries where surrogacy is legal and protected by clear regulations. Each destination has its own legal framework, eligibility rules, and price range. Here is what to know qualitatively — current figures live in our pricing brochure.

📍 Georgia

A well-established legal framework with predictable timelines. Eligibility is restricted to hetero couples (married or living together), but the programme structure is mature and birth certificates list both intended parents directly.

Hetero couples Donor photos available Both parents on birth certificate

📍 Colombia

Open to a wide range of family structures including same-sex couples and singles with a genetic link to their embryos. Egg donor selection is by phenotype rather than photos. Birth certificate arrangements offer flexibility.

All family types Phenotype-only donors Flexible BC options

📍 Mexico

An established surrogacy ecosystem open to hetero couples, same-sex couples, and singles. Egg donor profiles include photos. Local citizenship for the child is possible alongside your own nationality.

All family types Donor photos available Mexican passport possible

📍 United States

The strongest legal protections of any destination — and accordingly the highest price range. Open and anonymous donor options. Your child is born a U.S. citizen with an American passport. Best fit for families who prioritise legal certainty.

Embryo creation in Europe

Many of the families we support choose to create their embryos in Europe at our partner clinic in Albania, then ship them to the destination country. This is often more practical — and frequently more economical — than creating embryos at the surrogacy destination. We support the entire shipping process end-to-end.

🍳

With your own eggs

You begin ovarian stimulation with your own doctor, then travel to Albania for egg retrieval. Coordinated with your local fertility clinic, with full embryo shipping support afterwards.

  • Up to 8 embryos included
  • PGT-A genetic testing
  • Full shipping to destination

4-Blastocyst Guarantee with Egg Donation

For families using donor eggs. You choose your egg donor from a large database with photos, and the programme guarantees a minimum of four embryos before transfer.

  • Minimum 4 embryos guaranteed
  • Donor database with photos
  • Up to 8 embryos included

What drives the final price

Two families starting in the same destination can end up with very different total costs. Here are the five variables that move the needle most.

01
🍳

Source of eggs

Your own eggs, a known donor, or an anonymous donor selected from a profile database with photos. Each has different costs and timelines.

02
🔁

Number of IVF cycles

Most journeys plan for one cycle but build in flexibility for additional attempts. Programmes with guarantees behave very differently from open-ended ones.

03
🧬

Genetic testing & medical add-ons

PGT-A is included as standard in our programmes. Additional screening, sperm wash, or carrier panels are quoted only where medically indicated.

04

Travel choices

Number of in-country trips, length of stay around the birth, and accommodation standard. Often underestimated — the birth window alone can mean several weeks abroad.

05
📑

Citizenship and legal documentation

Procedures vary by destination and the intended parents’ nationality. Some require apostilled and translated documents that cost time and money.

Hidden fees and red flags to watch for

A “cheap” quote often becomes the most expensive option once you add the missing line items. When you compare proposals, here are the questions to ask — the ones we wish more families knew to ask before signing.

?

Is surrogate compensation bundled or separate?

Some agencies show a low headline figure that excludes monthly expenses, maternity clothing, lost wages, or end-of-pregnancy bonuses.

?

Is PGT-A genetic testing included?

PGT-A pre-implantation screening can add significantly if billed per-embryo. Check whether it’s a fixed line item or open-ended.

?

What happens if a cycle fails?

Look for “re-do” or repeat-cycle fees. Programmes with guarantees behave very differently from pay-as-you-go ones, especially with donor eggs.

?

Are legal fees fixed, capped, or hourly?

In some destinations legal work is hourly and can grow if disputes or document issues arise. Ask for a worst-case estimate, not a best-case one.

?

Is the agency paid commission by the clinic?

If yes, their incentive isn’t aligned with finding the best fit for you. Independent agencies bill you directly and accept zero commission.

?

Are translation and document certification included?

Apostilling and certified translation of birth certificates and other documents is often unbundled. It can add up across several documents.

?

Who handles post-birth procedures?

Birth certificate registration, passport issuance, and exit documentation should be clearly assigned and priced. This is where many journeys hit snags.

Why an independent agency matters

Most surrogacy “agencies” you find online are paid commission by the clinics they refer you to. That structure means their incentive is to send you to the destination that pays them best — not the one that fits your situation. Nest & Co is structured differently. We do not take commissions from clinics or local agencies. Our fee is paid directly by you, transparently, and our advice is unambiguously on your side.

Frequently asked questions about surrogacy pricing

How much does international surrogacy actually cost?

Total costs vary widely by destination, by the source of the eggs, by the type of programme, and by your travel choices. Two families starting in the same country can end up with very different totals. The honest answer is that meaningful pricing exists only once we’ve understood your situation in detail — which is exactly what our free initial consultation is for.

For current programme costs by destination, you can download our 2026 pricing brochure.

Why don’t you publish specific prices on this page?

Because prices on public pages are almost always misleading. The headline figure rarely matches what a family actually pays, and we’ve seen too many quotes designed for SEO rather than for honesty. Our brochure lists current programme costs clearly; once you share your situation we can give you a meaningful, itemised estimate rather than a marketing number.

Which is the most affordable surrogacy destination?

Colombia is generally our most accessible destination on programme cost alone, while Georgia offers a mature legal framework at a similar price point for eligible families. The United States provides the strongest legal protections but at a meaningfully higher cost. Our brochure compares them all side by side.

What is typically included in a complete surrogacy quote?

A complete quote covers five categories: destination programme fees (including surrogate compensation, agency coordination, medical management, in-country legal work, and post-birth procedures), embryo creation, optional medical add-ons, independent guidance fees, and your own travel and personal expenses. Anything outside those categories should be flagged and explained.

Are there hidden fees in international surrogacy?

Hidden fees are the single most common complaint we hear from families who started elsewhere. Common pitfalls include unbundled surrogate expenses, per-embryo PGT-A billing, hourly legal work, document apostilles and translations, and post-birth administrative costs. Our guide’s red flags section walks through what to look for.

How is Nest & Co’s fee different from a typical agency?

We are an independent consulting agency. We do not take commissions from clinics or local partners — our fee is billed directly to you and listed transparently in the brochure. That structural difference is what allows us to honestly represent your interests rather than the clinic’s.

Can I get an itemised quote before I commit to anything?

Yes. After your free initial consultation we provide a detailed, itemised cost schedule for the destinations and programme structure that fit your situation. There is no commitment until you decide to move forward.

How do I get a personalised cost estimate?

Two options: download our 2026 pricing brochure for a complete reference, or book a free consultation and we’ll send you a personalised estimate based on your situation within a few days.
